  3. New York Newsday reported in April that a
  4. forty-six-year-old Worcester, Mass., man
  5. inexplicably began speaking with a French
  6. accent immediately after he was involved in
  7. an  automobile accident last year. Dr. Majis
  8. Moonis told the annual meeting of the
  9. American  Academy of Neurology that about two
  10. dozen cases of "foreign accent syndrome" have
  11. been  reported in this century, caused by a
  12. change in the brain circuit involved with
  13. motor control that  affects the vocal cords.

  15. The Litigious Society

  17. In March, the U.S. Court of Appeals in Denver
  18. dismissed a civil lawsuit by Merrill
  19. Chamberlain, who is serving a life sentence
  20. for the murder of an Albuquerque, N.M.,
  21. police  officer. Chamberlain had sued the
  22. Albuquerque Police Department and the city,
  23. claiming that he  wouldn't have been guilty
  24. of murder if the officer had not allowed him
  25. surreptitiously to gain  access to his
  26. handgun or if the officer had been wearing a
  27. bullet- proof vest.

  29. In April, Scott Abrams, twenty-seven, filed a
  30. $2 million lawsuit against the owners and
  31. managers of an apartment building for
  32. injuries he suffered in 1991 when he was hit
  33. by lightning  while sitting on the roof of
  34. the building during an electrical storm. He
  35. said the defendants were  negligent in
  36. maintaining the rooftop and should have
  37. provided signs and brighter paint, among
  38. other things. When hit, Abrams was sitting on
  39. a ledge on the roof with his feet in a water
  40. puddle;  rescue workers revived him from
  41. cardiac arrest.

  43. In August, Anna Lilienthal, sixty-three,
  44. filed a lawsuit against the city of Simi
  45. Valley, Calif., for  injuries suffered at the
  46. city's Fourth of July celebration when a
  47. skydiver missed his target and  landed on top
  48. of her.

  50. In March, the Wyoming Supreme Court on a
  51. technicality revived Richard Osborn's
  52. lawsuit,  sending back for trial his claim
  53. that a Casper video store defrauded him.
  54. Osborn said he bought  the X-rated BelIe of
  55. the Ball based on a photo on the package
  56. featuring actress Busty Belle, but  later
  57. discovered that Belle was on screen for only
  58. eight or nine of the film's sixty-plus
  59. minutes.  Osborn seeks a refund of the $29.95
  60. purchase price plus $55.79 in reimbursement
  61. for medicine  because he said the stress of
  62. not seeing more of Ms. Belle caused an asthma
  63. attack -- plus  $50,000 for "pain and
  64. suffering."

  66. In February, a federal judge in Washington,
  67. D.C., dismissed a lawsuit filed by a sex
  68. offender  serving time in D.C.'s Lorton
  69. Reformatory. Michael A. Johnson had filed the
  70. lawsuit for  $12,500 because the prison store
  71. had charged him $6 for a $5.80 book of twenty
  72. twenty-  nine-cent stamps.

  74. In February, Kenneth Bruckner of Gering,
  75. Neb., filed a lawsuit against the
  76. Presbyterian/St.  Luke's Medical Center in
  77. Denver, claiming that the cleanser used to
  78. disinfect the toilet seat he  was using was
  79. highly toxic and had caused him permanent
  80. burns, neurologic injuries, and  urologic and
  81. sexual dysfunction. Said Bruckner's attorney,
  82. "What's the world coming to if it's  not safe
  83. to sit on the toilet and read the paper!"

  87. The Weirdo American Community

  89. The New Yorker magazine reported in April
  90. that artist Nancy Rubins's work, appearing at
  91. the  Kasmin gallery on Grand Street,
  92. consisted of a room "nearly filled" with "old
  93. mattresses dotted  with mounds of partially
  94. mashed Entenmann's cakes and suspended a few
  95. inches off the floor."  No other information
  96. about the exhibit was given.

  100. Seattle, Wash., police arrested a twenty-
  101. seven- year-old man in April after he
  102. attempted to  deposit a check into his
  103. account at a Washington Mutual Bank office.
  104. According to a teller, he  is the same man
  105. who robbed the branch two days earlier.
